Building a Sustainable and Resilient Future through Smart City Planning at the Town of Bridgewater
Roadshow 2023: Smart Cities - Canada
Most people, irrespective of where they live, want their lives to be enhanced by all of the technologies that are available, yet it is often the smaller and more regional places that seem to get overlooked. The Town of Bridgewater, on the south shore of Nova Scotia, was determined to not be left behind. Leon de Vreede, the Sustainability Planner within the Community Development Department of Town of Bridgewater, says that despite their meagre population of 8,600, for a decade or so they have been undertaking innovation related initiatives particularly in the field of energy and climate.

Even before the global pandemic overtook the thinking of most cities and governments, the pending crisis of climate change was at the top of many government agendas. Architecting the Future Smart City
Cities and regions all over the world need to continually adapt to keep up with technology and with the expectations of their citizens. In New Zealand, given the size of the country and the spread of the population, there are significant differences and challenges between the largest cities and the smallest regions. Wellington is the capital and one of the largest cities. “People said that we were absolutely mad to go down the Zealandia journey, but now we’re doing something even more extraordinary, which is to try and get rid of predators from across the entire city. No major urban …

IoT in the Public Sector
Essentially the document and the plan have “five priority areas: institutions and governance; infrastructure funding and pricing; housing affordability and supply; climate change, resilience and the environment; and technology change and our digital future.” Although technology is listed separately, in many ways it “runs across all of the priorities, and adapting to technology is essential to lowering costs, improving services and improving infrastructure delivery.” The problem however – which in some ways is a good problem to have – is that “we’re laying down assets that have very long lifespans.” Some are “more than generational, like some of our water …

5 Innovations Transforming Australia’s Mobility Landscape
In Australia, emerging innovations in mobility technologies are helping to connect communities locally and across regional areas. As an added bonus, these projects are delivering a broad range of social, environmental and economic outcomes, demonstrating the benefits of future mobility in Australia’s states and territories. By integrating real-time data, communications and vehicle-sensing technologies, ITS can monitor and improve the safety, efficiency, management and operations of vehicles and transport systems. Some of the primary benefits of ITS include improving traffic management, increasing motorway efficiency and the development of smart motorways.
