Learn how the Department for Education used AWS cloud to reduce payroll processing time without additional Oracle licensing
Department for Education (DfE) South Australia provides integrated education, training and child development services that benefit over 800 schools and 179,000 students in SA. DfE’s Payroll system was identified as the linchpin of the Education Business Continuity Plan. Failure to pay around 32,000 teachers would result in severe consequences. From this, the project was born to migrate a bespoke on-premise payroll system – a payroll system known as “Valeo” – to a secure cloud environment without impacting or degrading services. The Valeo Payroll System was to support payments to over 20K Department employees.
With their strategic local partners, Telstra Purple, Blue Crystal Solutions (BCS) and AWS, they were able to offer Valeo as a central cloud-based solution that schools can consume, with governance and controls in place.

Thanks to the outcome of our Primesize Target Architecture report service, BCS identified a best-fit plan that saw them move into an AWS Cloud solution, significantly reducing their payroll processing without needing more licenses.
The Business Benefits
A reduction in processing time from 8 to 3 hours, meeting South Australia’s Auditor General’s recommendation for increased redundancy, durability, availability and cost-effectiveness compared to on-premises solutions.
“We wanted to work with a local company with the expertise and knowledge to do this. We didn’t want to reinvent the wheel and do this ourselves. We mitigated risk using Blue Crystal Solutions’ expertise” – Simon Chapman, Assistant Director, Digital Architecture and Operations, DfE.
Hear Simon, Vito Rinaldi, Managing Director for BCS and Shahin Mohamadian, Partner Acceleration Manager from AWS, recount DfE’s Public Sector Cloud Adoption journey with BCS in partnership with Telstra Purple, leveraging AWS technologies.
